Onlookers mostly neighbours and acquaintances of the John’s family, looked in awe and bewilderment as the women both claimed to be married to the dead man without knowing themselves.
The deceased was said to have died in the hands of one of the women, who claimed she was six months pregnant and married John at a registry in Abuja two years ago.
The other woman called Shirley told the crowd she married the same man 10 years ago in Delta State. Late John’s neighbours who spoke to Aso Chronicle, attested to knowing Shirley, popularly called Mama Joan.
Another point of contention at the hospital was the true owner of the car in which John’s corpse was brought to the hospital. While Mama Joan claimed it belonged to John, the other woman said it belonged to her. Our reporter heard her saying “The car I suffered to buy personally from Cotonou? I pray God to revive him so he can speak with his mouth.”
Neighbours also said John used to drive the car around but said he had no known means of livelihood. “It was Mama Joan that housed, fed and clothed him,” a neighbor said.
The other woman who claimed she was six months pregnant for John said on that fateful day (Friday), John came to her requesting for fuel money and that she told him she had no money. She said John left angry and told her he was going to Usman Dam after Dutse-Alhaji, adding that few hours later, two men who were not known to her brought him unconscious and said he slumped on his way.
The woman said she then rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead and does not know the identity of the men that brought him.
One of Shirley’s female neighbours at 2:1 Kubwa residence said the John took their two kids to school early on Friday and later went out with a promise to return home at noon to take Mama Joan out. “When the promised time was due, he didn’t return and she decided to call his mobile telephone number. The phone rang repeatedly with no response,” she said.
The neighbour further explained that a woman called later using late John’s phone to announce that he (John) was at the Kubwa Hospital, dead.
A uniformed Policeman from the Kubwa Phase 4 Division was sighted at the hospital. He took the two women to the station to take their statements.
A new twist was added to the unfolding drama when one of the onlookers went close to the corpse lodged behind a Premeira saloon car in the vicinity of the hospital and said the corpse was still warm after several hours.
Another neighbour alleged he might have been tortured to death, saying “I saw marks on his two wrists which suggest that he was bounded. There were also marks around his neck.”
The FCT Public Relations Officer, Doris London confirmed the incident in a telephone chat with Aso Chronicle but declined to give further details.
She said investigations were currently ongoing.
